The Late Mr Ashok Kumar - Founder and Chairman Emeritus

Talk about combating illegal trade of wildlife in India and Mr Ashok Kumar’s name would feature at the top of the list. Leaving the cushy confines of the corporate world, Mr Kumar dedicated his life to break the back bone of the illegal wildlife trade in India. Mr Kumar was responsible for coining the word wildlife crime in India, assisting enforcement agencies in hundreds of seizures including the ones relating to the infamous Sansar Chand and dozens of litigations that led the fight against crime in the country. He was the first Director of Traffic India, former Vice-President of WPSI and served as a consultant to the MoEF for many years. One of his life’s preoccupations has been to checkmate poachers like Sansar Chand, whom he considers one of the most dangerous wildlife traders ever to have operated in India.

Once when asked by Sanctuary Asia’s editor, Bittu Sehgal, if three decades of wildlife work had left him with any regrets he said, “Not one. Wildlife has given me so much – besides the deep satisfaction I get from what I do. I have travelled to the remotest parts of this world, seen the rarest creatures... would I have done that as an executive in a steel company? I doubt it. Life has come full circle. It started with my mother inspiring me and now it is my children and grandchildren who are the driving force behind my motivation. That forest energises me and inspires me, as do my family and friends.”
