Chennai, Tamil Nadu, December 16, 2016: A field team comprising personnel from IFAW-WTI’s Emergency Relief Network (ERN) and People for Cattle in India (PFCI) is providing veterinary support to distressed animals affected by Cyclone Vardah in Chennai and neighbouring areas.
A mobile medical treatment and rescue camp was organised yesterday at East Coast Road (ECR), Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), Sholinganallur, Velachery and Palliakaranai to rescue stranded and displaced animals, treat affected animals for injuries and/or illness, administer vaccinations as a preventive measure, and provide food.
As many as 200 animals (cattle and dogs) and birds were fed, treated and rescued by the team, which included a veterinary doctor. Carcasses of animals and birds found in cyclone affected areas were also buried to prevent the outbreak of disease. ERN teams will be organising more such camps in the coming days.
