Leopard 'strays' into house in Assam, rescued
Digboi (Assam), November 20, 2008: An adventurous young male leopard was rescued yesterday by the Assam Forest Department and WTI-IFAW (Wildlife Trust of India – International Fund for Animal Welfare) from Digboi town in the northeast Indian state of Assam. It was later released in the nearby Upper Dihing Reserve Forest.

CITES-approved ivory sale begins
Namibia, October 29, 2008: The controversial auction of stockpiled ivory from four African nations allowed by the 14th CoP of CITES began yesterday. About 7 tonnes of raw African elephant tusks as well as carved ivory from Namibia were sold to bidders Japan and China.
The ongoing one-off sale of about 108 tonnes of ivory by Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa is the second, since the 1989 international ban on trade in elephant parts.

20 get three years imprisonment for hunting Asiatic lions
Junagadh (Gujarat), October 23, 2008: Twenty persons were convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment by a Gujarat court today, for poaching endangered Asiatic lions in Gir National Park in March last year.
The Court of PK Makwana, I class magistrate, Junagadh, announced the sentence which also included a fine of Rs 10,000 each.
