Bihar State Forest Department ( is responsible for the protection and maintenance of wildlife and wild habitats in the state of Bihar. This includes important terrestrial species such as the tiger, leopard, bear, hyena, bison, chital etc, besides many varieties of fish, crocodilians (including the gharial), gangetic turtles and the freshwater dolphin. Bihar is also famous for its wetlands and its several varieties of local as well as migratory bird species.
