In Memory of Prof. Madhav Dhananjaya Gadgil (1942–2026)

Wildlife Trust of India mourns the passing of Prof. Madhav Gadgil – ecologist, thinker, institution-builder, and one of India’s most courageous voices for nature. His life’s work reshaped how we understand forests, communities, and the deep, living relationships between people and the landscapes they inhabit.

Prof. Gadgil was far more than a scientist of global repute. He was a conscience-keeper for Indian environmentalism. From his pioneering research in ecology and biodiversity to his unwavering advocacy for decentralised, democratic conservation, he consistently reminded us that nature protection cannot succeed without justice, participation, and respect for local knowledge. He believed that science must serve society—and that conservation must listen before it acts.

As the architect of the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel, Prof. Gadgil demonstrated rare moral clarity. At a time when speaking for ecological limits was politically inconvenient, he stood firm, articulating a vision that balanced development with ecological responsibility. His recommendations were rooted in rigorous science and an equally rigorous belief in people’s rights. His ideas continue to guide and inspire conservationists, planners, and communities across India.

For organisations like Wildlife Trust of India, Prof. Gadgil’s legacy is deeply personal. His writings, teaching, and public engagement shaped generations of conservation practitioners. He challenged us to think beyond species and protected areas, to see ecosystems as shared spaces of coexistence, culture, and care. He urged institutions to remain honest, self-critical, and grounded in ethics. Yet, those who knew him remember not only the intellectual giant but also the gentle mentor—curious, generous, and unafraid to ask difficult questions. He had the rare ability to combine scientific precision with humility, and activism with empathy.

India has lost one of its finest environmental minds, but Prof. Gadgil’s legacy lives on—in forests defended, in community voices amplified, and in young conservationists who continue to question, learn, and speak truth to power.

WTI Trustee Raman Sukumar who was Madhav Gadgil’s student, colleague and conservation partner over more than four decades remembers Professor Gadgil as “a true visionary in Indian and global environmental thought with a firm and unwavering commitment to using science, social justice and democracy to achieving conservation goals”.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, students, colleagues, and all those inspired by his life. The path he showed us is demanding, but it is clear. It is now for us to walk it—with courage, integrity, and care for the living world he devoted his life to protecting.
