Bandhavgarh Conflict Mitigation

Project Description

After an MOU was signed between the Forests Department, Government of Madhya Pradesh, and Wildlife Trust of India in January 2022, a project was initiated comprising of two broad components i.e. Human Elephant Conflict Mitigation in Bandhavgarh, MP and Central India Tiger Securement Project.

The objective of the HEC Mitigation project is to reduce the negative impacts of human-elephant conflict (HEC) in the Bandhavgarh-Sanjay landscape. The project has started with identifying elephant movement paths, mapping HEC hotspots, improving people’s understanding of elephants and conflict in the region, establishing a team of trained frontline forest staff, and forming and equipping Primary Response Teams.

The project site, the Bandhavgarh-Sanjay landscape, is home to a diverse range of wildlife. The project strategy to accomplish its goals includes identifying and improving wildlife corridors, enhancing frontline staff administration, developing a comprehensive mitigation plan, and educating the general population about elephants. Given the increasing frequency of HECs in Madhya Pradesh, the success of this project is critical in mitigating their negative impact and improving the current state of HEC mitigation in the region.

During the year 2022-23, imparted training on Human-elephant conflict mitigation to 58 frontline forest staff, and formed 15 Primary Response Teams with 75 members in total.
